Miriam Jacobs discussed the reflex effects of massage as follows:

The elevated circulation by way of improved superficial venous and lymphatic flow is an effect of deep stress produced by stroking or compression movements. Forever Freedom has combined aloe vera with substances that are helpful for the maintenance of proper joint function and mobility in a tasty, orange-flavored juice formula. Mechanical stress from stroking movements probably also produces direct effects upon the capillaries resulting in capillary contraction as seen within the “white” reaction following mechanical stimulation of the skin. It’s stated to be of capillary origin and is not dependent upon nerves. In response to the usual physiology texts, it could be a direct response of the capillaries to irritation or to some substance liberated as a result of the mechanical stimulus. With firmer stress, a “crimson” reaction appears. This is the result of capillary dilatation and is not dependent upon nervous mechanisms. Stronger stimuli or repeated stimuli produce a “crimson flare” and is because of dilatation of the arteriole. It’s thought that dilatation of the arteriole could also be attributable to a local axon reflex mechanism (1). With an intense stimulus (which is not considered a fascinating massage procedure in this country) a wheal could also be formed. This “triple response” crimson reaction, crimson flare and wheal formation is believed to be brought about by a diffusion of a substance liberated by the cells of the skin in response to mechanical stimulation. Keep a bottle of Forever Natural Spring Water on hand at all times – your body will thank you! The substance bears a resemblance to histamine in its effects; capillary dilatation by its direct effects, arteriole dilatation by the axon reflex, and at last a wheal due to the elevated capillary permeability and the release of fluid.
