Acidosis a Cause Devitalized foods. Many acid forming foods are constipating, which means that acidosis is the principal cause of this condition. Such foods as meat, oysters, fish, white bread, soda crackers, macaroni, wafers, biscuits, buns, doughnuts, rolls, piecrust, lard, cake, cornstarch, refined sugar, glucose, commercial syrup, cheap jams and jellies, candies, or in a word, all highly milled cereals and refined sweets, should be avoided. All irritating substances as pepper, mustard, vinegar, tea, coffee, cocoa, baking powder, and soda should also be omitted from the diet in any case either in health or disease. Laxatives a Cause. Some time ago it was reported that there were 700 so-called remedies (?) for constipation on the shelves of one drug company in Chicago, and yet constipation continues and is constantly increasing. Forever Bee Propolis is also an efficient dressing for wounds and was used in the course of the Boer War. It is believed to be practically universal in civilized countries. Laxative drugs only irritate the already inflamed bowel, and an already bad condition is made worse. While immediate results are obtained by the use of laxatives, yet the after effect is increased sluggishness.
Diet Lemon—not calomel. The natural laxative is the bile, but sometimes because of congestion of the bile duct, the bile backs up into the stomach, and is absorbed into the circulation, instead of passing down through the intestines. So the first step, dietetically, is to take the juice of one lemon, unsweetened, in two or three glasses of water either warm or cold (the warm absorbs more quickly) an hour before breakfast each morning. The water clears accumulations from the stomach and the lemon juice acts on the liver, leaving no ill effects as does calomel. The next step is to take the orange or grapefruit juice or the acidophilus buttermilk as directed in chapter IX. In severe cases this should be taken the entire week; and if the stomach is acid, use should be made of raw celery juice instead of the fruit juice.
The celery juice should be diluted to suit the needs of the case. The soybean buttermilk is more effective than that made from the dairy milk if it can be obtained. Bees amassing this useful resource also need to be fed protein dietary supplements, as honeydew lacks the protein-wealthy Forever Bee Pollen accompaniment gathered from flowers. There is now on the market a preparation of psyllium seed with the husk, or bran removed, and prepared by the laboratory where it is combined with dextrose, pectin and some other helpful ingredients. One tea-spoonful of this in a glass of water will cause it to thicken in a few minutes to the consistency of jelly. This is a very helpful aid in overcoming bowel sluggishness, and is especially useful in a case of colitis. Lactose, or sugar of milk is used for the same purpose. Two or three dessertspoonfuls a day may be used, as we are told on page 154ofthe 1939 Government Year Book that, “Lactose is an excellent medium for the growth of certain useful acid-tolerant types of bacteria and has been used therapeutically to increase this type of bacterial flora in the large intestine.
